LAGQ to premiere and tour a new piece by Shingo Fujii in March

IIn March 2012, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will play a series of concerts with guitar orchestras, featuring a new work by Kyoto-based composer/guitarist Shingo Fujii.  The piece is entitled “Shiki: Seasons of Japan” and is a Fantasia on Japanese Folksongs, dedicated to the victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.  To mark the one-year anniversary of this national tragedy, the new work will be performed by the Grammy-winning LAGQ with guitar orchestras of young students in the US, conducted by Mr. Fujii. The piece was commissioned by the Loudon County Public Schools, which encompasses one of the foremost youth guitar educational groups in the US. Over 50 students from this program will join LAGQ at the end of their recital on March 14 to play the world premiere, which will take will take place at Heritage High School (520 Evergreen Mill Road SE, Leesburg, VA 20175) at 7 pm on March 14, 2012.   It will be followed by performances in Greensboro, NC, at the Mid-America Guitar Ensemble Festival in Valparaiso, IN (with more than 200 guitarists!) and the Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Festival. Check the tour page for more info.
This project is a continuation of a long collaboration between LAGQ founder William Kanengiser and Kyoto-based guitarist composer Shingo Fujii. In 2006, Mr. Fujii wrote “Concerto de Los Angeles” for solo guitar and guitar orchestra for Mr. Kanengiser. It has been performed in China, Japan, and at many important events in the US including the GFA and Mid-America Guitar Ensemble Festival.  Well over 500 students have rehearsed and shared the stage with Mr. Kanengiser in professional public recital.  In this spirit, LAGQ looks forward to premiering this new work and forming a collaborative union with all the student performers and composer/conductor Shingo Fujii.
